Objective:

• Wordly Wise 3000 Book 4: Provides direct academic vocabulary instruction to develop the critical link between vocabulary and reading comprehension.  The robust activities, student engagement, and differentiated instruction provide the flexibility to meet the needs of today’s varying student population.
• One novel for close reading and analysis: novel studies are a way to learn and apply strategies to comprehend, to see things differently or understand others with differing, even opposing viewpoints. In addition, the novel study is a way of:
  • building experiences of the world,
  • helping us to see and understand things which have never happened to us firsthand,
  • building on our experiences to increase our knowledge of the unknown,
  • enabling us to witness and attempt to understand things from new vantage points.

分级阅读(leveled reading)大家都已经不陌生，但是词汇的分级(graded level vocabulary)可能并不常被提到。 Wordly Wise 采用词汇分级的方式，组织词汇学习，从易到难，循序渐进，坡度设置合理科学。



我们举例来看，“enormous”和“gigantic”，两个都是表达“巨大的”意思，但enormous出现在Book 2，gigantic出现在Book 5。



Wordly Wise 使用的是学校语言(school language)，通过词汇在教学场景中的使用频率，以及学生第一次遇到该词的年级，将词汇进行了难度分级，enormous通常在3-4年级出现，系统词频为200次，所以出现在Book2，而gigantic的出现，不早于5-6年级，词频约50次，所以出现在Book5。


一本词汇书的单词释义如果深奥复杂，那么学生记住并掌握就更不可能了。 Wordly Wise 以学生友好(student-friendlydefinition)的方式解释单词，同时为单词提供例句，再次加深释义的理解。


在 WordlyWise 3000中，diligent(book6 第五课)这个单词的词义定义为“working with great care and effort“(非常认真努力地工作)，例句为“Diligent students succeedin reaching their goals.”(勤奋的学生成功地实现了自己的目标.)学生在学完词义之后，在例句中再次理解并加深该释义的记忆。什么样的学生能实现目标呢？Students working with greatcare and effort。


Wordly Wise 中的词汇释义，不仅精准地概括了词义和典型用法，同时尽可能的使用日常用语来解释词义。而为词汇提供例句，在上下文的语言环境中，助力孩子进一步地理解词义。
