Description

Grade 9:  Bridging the Gaps

The transition between grade 8 to grade 9 can be a bumpy one. This program offers a small group environment where students can build their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills so that they can have the confidence and resilience to prepare for the next step into high school. Class will focus on short fiction and non-fiction analysis, oral communication skills, and developing critical arguments in written text.

Grade 10:  Exploring Opportunities

Now that students have completed one year of high school, they have a better understanding of where their strengths and areas of need are in their schooling. This program offers a small group environment where students can explore areas of interest for them while perfecting the art of creative writing and deeper literacy skills. As well, this program will cover preparation for the OSSLT which every high school student must pass in order to graduate in Ontario.

Grade 11:  Enrich Your Experience

The jump from junior level high school to the senior level can be daunting for students. The expectations are higher, and students are starting to think about what they might be doing post-secondary. This program’s focus is about fostering the self-confidence and boldness that every senior student must have to take academic risks and stand out in their class. In this class, students will be asked to dig deeper in critically analysing various texts (fiction, non-fiction, media) and complete close reading exercises to demonstrate their learning. There is also an opportunity to practice their oral communication skills in seminar exercises.

Grade 12:  The Final Frontier

Whatever a student is thinking about doing post-secondary, there are fundamental skills necessary for success and this program addresses this. This class offers a small group environment where students enter a sophisticated level to learning on their terms. Students explore topics that interest them and using the skills and concepts introduced in this course, they will enhance their ability to apply what they know and teach others. When you are truly skilled in reading, writing, and critical thinking, you are able to demonstrate to and educate others. Collaborative learning is a key skill to adapt to a changing world.

自我介绍

"I have been a high school teacher with the Peel Board of Education for 21 years. In addition to being an English, History, Law, World Religions, English Language Learning (ELL) and Civics teacher, I was the Curriculum Head of English for 10 years. My role in education is to facilitate inquiry, communication, engagement, and empathy among my students. In my career, I have built a strong literacy development program and an effective assessment and evaluation process, based on Growing Success, in both the History and English departments. I also started a student writing centre and professional library. Additionally, I created a weekly tutoring program for students preparing to write the OSSLT and who require essay writing assistance.

I am passionate about meeting all my students' academic needs as I embrace their diversity and their unique abilities. I am qualified to teach a broad range of subjects with a specialty in teaching English literature, essay writing and literacy test preparation. In my many years of experience, I have found that developing lessons that are accessible and relevant to students gives them the best chances for academic success. Any student can reach their full potential when learning is fun and engaging."
