  • 抓取重要细节,并根据文本进行推理;
  • 分析人物、冲突、主题和叙述视角;
  • 学习引用文本内容来支持自己的观点;
  • 讨论不同的观点和对文本的不同理解;
  • 提升文学阅读中的书面表达能力;

Novel Study: One selected novel
Number of Sessions: 16

Course Description

A strong vocabulary is essential for becoming a stronger reader and writer—but learning words from a list alone can quickly become repetitive.

Word Power & Novel Study combines structured vocabulary instruction with the reading of a full-length novel, helping students not only learn new words, but also understand and use language in meaningful contexts.

Throughout the semester, students will work with Wordly Wise 3000 Book 5 to systematically build their academic vocabulary. They will explore word meanings, usage, synonyms, context clues, and word relationships while strengthening the vocabulary skills needed for increasingly challenging school reading.

At the same time, students will read and discuss one carefully selected novel. Through close reading, class discussion, and written responses, students will develop stronger reading comprehension and learn to think beyond the basic plot.

The novel study gives students opportunities to:

  • identify important details and make inferences;
  • analyze characters, conflicts, themes, and point of view;
  • support ideas with evidence from the text;
  • discuss different perspectives and interpretations;
  • strengthen written responses to literature;
  • encounter rich vocabulary naturally through authentic reading.

By connecting vocabulary study with real literature, students begin to see words as more than definitions to memorize. They learn how language works inside a story—and how to use stronger vocabulary in their own reading, thinking, speaking, and writing.

Novel Selection

One novel will be selected based on the reading level and interests of the class. Possible selections include:

  • Number the Stars — Lois Lowry
  • Wonder by R. J. Palacio
  • Walking Home — Eric Walters
  • A Long Walk to Water — Linda Sue Park
  • Ungifted — Gordon Korman

Course Goal

The goal of this course is to help students build a stronger vocabulary while becoming more thoughtful, confident, and independent readers.
