This course is designed to bridge the gap between academic literary study and the practical literacy skills required for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). The following four pillars represent the core areas of focus for the term.

1. Novel Study & Literary Analysis

The cornerstone of Grade 10 English is the deep dive into a major work of fiction.

Critical Reading: Exploring complex themes such as social justice, identity, and power.

Literary Devices: Identifying and analyzing the use of symbolism, metaphor, and irony.

Essay Writing: Developing formal academic arguments and mastering the "Point-Proof-Analysis" (PPA) structure.

2. News Reports & Media Literacy

This unit focuses on how information is consumed and created in the modern world.

Journalistic Writing: Learning the "Inverted Pyramid" structure used in professional news reporting.

Fact vs. Opinion: Analyzing bias and perspective in current event coverage.

Structural Skills: Practicing the specific "News Report" format required for the OSSLT.

3. Oral Communication & Public Presentation

Students will build the confidence to share their ideas effectively through spoken word.

Presentation Skills: Mastering visual aids, body language, and vocal projection.

Rhetoric: Learning how to persuade an audience using logic (logos), emotion (pathos), and credibility (ethos).

Formal Speech: Preparing and delivering a structured presentation on a researched topic.
